Antonio Conte does not say when Christian Romero will return to Tottenham: “I don’t know, January or February. But in 2021, he’s finished playing”; Romero suffered a hamstring injury in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil last month.
Christian Romero will not play again in 2021 after Tottenham boss Antonio Conte said the defender’s hamstring injury was serious.
Romero was injured in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil last month.
He will miss at least 10 games between January 2 and will play Brentford at home on Thursday, and boss Conte does not know when he will train again.
“The news is not positive and the injuries are serious,” Conte said. “It will take time until we see him again. Next year we will have to check his injuries every week, but the injury is serious.
“He’s trying to recover now, but it will take a long time for him to recover. It’s unfortunate because he’s an important player for us and his injury is very serious.
“I don’t know, January or February. But by 2021, he’s finished [the game]. We have to wait and recover well.”
Conte: When I got the job, I didn’t talk about the January transfer
Romero’s injury could lead to the Spurs playing in the January transfer window, but Conte says he has no idea what he will bring next season.
“To be honest, I didn’t talk about it when I decided to be Tottenham’s manager,” he said.
“You have to evaluate yourself and feel when you get a job. To be honest, I felt that Tottenham was the right club to work and bring my ideas and football philosophy to the table. That’s why I accepted my job.
“I’m not talking about January or how to improve the team. I repeat: I’m here because I’m very motivated and patient to start a new job with Tottenham.”
Romero’s team-mate Argentina’s Giovanni Lo Celso has also returned from injury with a hamstring injury and will also miss the London derby against Brentford.
“Like Giovanni Lo Celso and Christian Romero, they have been injured with the national team,” Conte said.
“It’s unfortunate, of course, but Giovanni is much better than Romero.
“My expectation is to see him the day after the game against Brentford. He started working on the pitch.
“Obviously, Giovanni is another player we should try to use. He’s a good player and now I want to work with him.”
“I need to appreciate Bergway”
It has been reported that Steven Bergway will leave the club in January and Conte has expressed no interest in signing the winger.
The Italian has said he should make a “significant assessment” of the Netherlands, but sees him as part of the team.
“We’re talking about an important player and it was a pity for me – but not for the national team, because he scored in the Dutch national team – because I wanted to get him in two weeks of international break. will know better, ”Conte added.
“But he’s really great. He’s a good one-on-one, he’s fast, he’s good, he can beat people and get points. Now we’re working.
“Now he understands what I want from him. For me, he’s one of the strikers who can play in three positions.
“Of course he’s a player I have to evaluate. But he’s on my team and I’m sure of him.
“[Thursday] he’s ready and ready. [Against Mura] he had a problem, otherwise he would have played. But [against Brentford] he’s ready, he’s ready. I’m counting on him.”
