As Liverpool look to bounce back in the Premier League table, there has been much fuss over their transfer plans, both in January and over the summer.

Liverpool’s Saturday meeting with Chelsea could very well determine whether the Reds feel the need to dive into the transfer market again this month.

The Reds acted quickly to seal their first signing of the transfer window and new forward Cody Gakpo has featured more than once since joining from PSV Eindhoven. Manager Jurgen Klopp had played down any further player suggestions in January but the results on the pitch demonstrated the need for reinforcements in the eyes of some.

Another league setback would further damage Liverpool’s top four hopes, potentially forcing Klopp and his staff into a change of plans, but who they bring in is a different question. Here are the latest lines from Anfield ahead of the big weekend.

Brighton gave the Caicedo update
Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi was asked about midfielder being linked with Liverpool’s Moises Caicedo amid January interest in Ecuador. Chelsea are also eyeing the youngster, who joined Brighton under current Blues boss Graham Potter.

“It’s difficult to change players now, in this season,” said De Zerbi, after seeing forward Leandro Trossard leave the Seagulls to join Arsenal. “I hope he finishes the season with us, but in the transfer market it is always difficult to give an answer.

“When there are some bigger teams [who] want our players, it is good news for us. The best solution is for him to finish the season with us, and for him next summer it is better to change team.”

Brighton wants to keep Moises Caicedo

The Reds have tracked Fresneda
Liverpool are among the clubs keeping tabs on young Spaniard Ivan Fresneda, according to The Athletic. The right-back has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal among the front runners.

Fresneda, who turned 18 in September, has played nine times in La Liga this season. His club Real Valladolid are reportedly after £13.1 million for a January sale, with Newcastle, Borussia Dortmund and Rennes also interested in the move.

The Madrid-born teenager spent time in Real Madrid’s academy as a youth, but a return to the Bernabeu seems unlikely. According to 90min, Los Blancos have no plans to exercise the options they hold on the defender.

Firmino wants to stay

Roberto Firmino is approaching eight years at Anfield

Roberto Firmino’s future is a what if, with the Brazilian nearing the end of his current contract. However, based on his comments in Liverpool’s match magazine, it appears the former Hoffenheim man is ready to extend his stay.

Firmino first joined the club in 2015, months before Jurgen Klopp took over as manager. He was part of the 2019 Champions League winning team, and scored the winning goal in the Club World Cup final a few months later.

“I love it here and I intend to stay here and help Liverpool FC,” said the 31-year-old. “Winning the Premier League and Champions League is a dream for all players.

“This is history, a huge legacy. When it happened, we felt very special, thanked God for giving this to us.”
