Canberra Raiders defeat Gold Coast Titans, comeback victory

NRL

The Canberra Raiders have equalled a club record, coming back from four tries down to stun the Gold Coast Titans.

Canberra found itself in a 22-point hole after a blistering start from the Titans before storming home to record a 24-22 win at GIO Stadium.

After conceding the first four tries of the match, the Raiders responded with five unanswered tries to steal the victory at the death.

The opening half on Saturday night was dominated by the Titans before Raiders centre Semi Valemei gave his side some life with a try in the shadows of half-time.

But trailing by 18 points at the main break, the challenge was on for the Raiders.

Fellow Raiders centre Matthew Timoko stepped up big for Canberra with back-to-back tries to open the second half before Sebastian Kris crossed over to make it four unanswered.

While it was all good signs for the Raiders, poor kicking from Brad Schneider meant the Titans still held a four-point lead.

With just a tick over five minutes remaining in the match, it was Schneider who put in the well-weighted grubber to fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad to pounce on in the in-goal as Canberra took the lead.

“They (Canberra) turned it on its head. That’s one of the greatest comebacks I think I’ve ever seen from a team that looked like they were going nowhere,” said NRL great Benji Marshall in commentary for Fox League.

Nicoll-Klokstad said he was proud of his side for not taking the easy option of giving up early.

“Very proud of the boys. It would’ve been easy for us to roll over,” said Nicoll-Klokstad after the match.

“But it’s good to see a bit of backbone and the boys come out and get the job done. Very proud of the boys.”

The match ended with a brutal shot from Valemei when he forced a knock-on from AJ Brimson with a crunching tackle in the dying seconds.
