The Chelsea holders will face Lille in the round of 16 of the Champions League after the second knockout stage draw.
A “technical problem” caused an error in the initial draw, which UEFA described as “declared void”.
Premier League champions Manchester City will face Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon, while six-time Liverpool winners will face three-time Inter winners.
Manchester United take on the Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.
In the extraordinary draw of the group, the 13-time champions of Real Madrid clash with the French powerhouse Paris St-Germain.
Champions League round of 16 draw:
Red Bull Salzburg v Bayern Munich
Sporting Lisbon – Manchester City
Chelsea v Lille
Atletico Madrid-Manchester United
Why has it been redesigned?
In the original draw, Manchester United’s ball was removed from the pot against Villarreal, but they were not eligible to face each other as they had been in the same group – an eventuality UEFA said technology should have prevented.
Last season’s Europa League winners, Villarreal, were paired with Premier League City champions.
Further confusion appeared to occur when United were squeezed out of the pot of possible opponents for Atletico Madrid, and Liverpool were included instead.
However, United could have played against the Spanish side and Liverpool could not, having moved into the knockout stage from the same group.
UEFA said in a statement: “Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that tells the referees which teams can play against each other, a clerical error has occurred in the UEFA Champions round of 16 draw. League.
As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone “.
A big change this season …
The first leg will take place on 15, 16, 22 and 23 February, the second on 8, 9, 15 and 16 March.
Chelsea are the only English side to play the first leg at home, with the other three all away after winning their respective groups.
A major change from this season sees the removal of the away goals rule, so the level of parity after 180 minutes will go into overtime.
If the teams still cannot be separated after the additional 30 minutes, it is time to go to penalties.
This season’s final will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia on May 28.
Premier League teams will love their chances – analysis
Phil McNulty, chief football writer
The grand charade of the Champions League round of 16 draw was yet another example of the sport’s ability to make something seemingly simply so complicated, but at least the Premier League club quartet finally knows their fate.
For Chelsea, it was the same second time after a “software” glitch was resolved as they were paired once again with French champions Lille, a draw that will leave them cautiously optimistic about progress.
Manchester United, who had originally been fielded for the next chapter of the rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi after drawing Paris St-Germain, still had a tough match at Atletico Madrid in the revised version. Hard, but perhaps not as hard as it once was with Atletico fighting for form. No one, however, should undo manager Diego Simeone’s ability to make life difficult for anyone in this tournament.
Liverpool fared slightly worse the second time they asked for it. Inter, Italian champions and Serie A leaders, will present a tougher challenge than the original opponents of Red Bull Salzburg, but Jurgen Klopp’s team will still be the favorite.
Manchester City will also believe they can enter the quarter-finals as they will now meet Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon following the new draw. They would also have been favored by their first pair against Villarreal and each of the Premier League teams will firmly believe they can reach the quarterfinals.
‘Delete this file?’ – reaction on social media
The new draw meant spectators were robbed of a match between PSG and Manchester United that would have pitted two of the greatest players of all time, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo against each other.
