England head coach Chris Silverwood believes Joe Root’s leadership played a key role in selecting the strongest squad for the Ashes tour to Australia. For several months, it seemed possible that the Ashes would be canceled due to concerns from English players and their families about Australia’s strict coronavirus quarantine rules. England Vice-Captain Jos Buttler was among the high-profile players who expressed doubts about participating in the series, which opens in Brisbane on December 8th. However, Silverwood said Test Skipper Roots’ compassionate, diplomatic approach helped the players eventually buy their way into the tour.

When Silverwood revealed England’s 17-strong Ashes squad on Sunday, there were no objections or opt-outs from the list.

“There was a lot of negotiation and we saw that our captain has a lot of class. He really led from the front,” said Silverwood.

“I cannot emphasize enough how noble he was in these negotiations and how he listened to both sides of the argument.

“He has shown a lot of empathy and a lot of really good leadership to get the players to this point. His players have stood behind him and will follow him, as have I and my staff.”

“What I think it has done is to strengthen his position as a leader. All the boys have recognized that, all of my employees have recognized that and it has made us all stay behind him.”

England star all-rounder Ben Stokes is taking an indefinite break from cricket as he prioritizes his mental health and recovers from a finger injury.

There appears to be some logistical leeway for Stokes to join the Ashes squad as a late arrival.

But given the sensitivity of his situation, Silverwood refused to give any indication as to whether this could happen.

“There will be no pressure from me to rush back. When Ben is ready he will call me and then we will cross the bridge when we get to,” he said.

“My first intention is to make sure he is fine from a wellbeing standpoint.”
