17th week of NFL power rankings: Cincinnati Bengals move up to Top 10, Indianapolis Colts move up to Top 5

NFL strength rankings going into Week 17 of the 2021 season (previous rankings in brackets):

  1. Packers (1): The magic of Christmas? Aaron Rodgers sounds very grateful to be a part of this franchise after Saturday’s win. It certainly looks like he and the organization are heading towards a reconciliation that might make him a rare QB to play his entire career in one place.
  2. Chiefs (2): Their league-best eight-game winning streak was fueled by a dominant six-game defensive streak at Arrowhead Stadium. AFC champions West will not play there again until post-season and will have to do some work in Cincinnati and/or Denver to secure the home advantage.
  3. Buccaneers (3): In less than two seasons at Tampa Bay, Tom Brady has led the Bucs to 11 consecutive winning seasons for the first time in franchise history and is just four TD passes from second place on the club’s career roster. For the encore, he might as well be their first two-time Super Bowl-winning QB.

  1. Bills (10): They host Atlanta and NYJ to close out the regular season – meaning the Buffalo will most likely reach the postseason with four straight wins and the AFC East crown as has been the main plan all along.
  2. Patriots (7): OLB Matt Judon on the reserve/COVID-19 roster, and QB Mac Jones on the reserve/rookie roster for the whole month. New England, which will host Jacksonville next, will likely still be limping into the postseason, but the team has lost significant momentum.
  3. Titans (9): What a crucial comeback WR A.J. Chocolate? He set a league record with eight catches in the third down of Week 16 from San Francisco.
  4. Bengals (13): Meet the first team in NFL history with a 4,000-yard passer (Joe Burrow), a 1,000-yard rusher (Joe Mixon) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins) all shy of their anniversary 26. Looks like they could be king of the jungle for a while.

JARRETT BELL: Get ready for bad playoff football, thanks to the expanded field

  1. Cardinals (8): Who cares that they’ve fallen off their NFC West perch? A team that loses four times in a row at home is better off making it to the postseason.
  2. 49ers (11): After two incredible months of work, will one bad game and an ill-timed thumb injury end QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s tenure in the Bay Area?
  3. Eagles (16): Pretty good holiday in Philly, Iggles moved into a projected wild-card slot and essentially locked in a first-round pick from Indianapolis that was originally a second-round conditional when Wentz was traded earlier this year.
  4. Vikings (15): Did you know that they have only lost twice in their last six trips to Lambeau Field? Let’s just say… there are (more than) opportunities.
  5. Chargers (12): If their season is ultimately marred by Davis Mills and Rex Burkhead – or generally by a defense scoring more points than anyone other than the Jets – it’s worth asking how much progress the Bolts have made.
  6. Raiders (18): As bad as this dressing room feels at various points of the stellar season, Silver and Black might end a fun playoff story.
  7. Dolphins (20): They are the first team to have seven straight defeats and seven consecutive wins in the same season – and could become the first team to qualify for the playoffs after a 1-7 start.
