Cristiano Ronaldo has left Manchester United for the second time, less than 18 months after returning to Old Trafford.

Manchester United have wanted to see Cristiano Ronaldo return home for years. There was always a sense that the Portugal international had unfinished business at Old Trafford, where he spent six years at the club before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009. But sometimes getting back with your ex is not a good thing…

Last summer, Manchester United thought they would make a move when they brought in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane from Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid respectively.

But when word reached Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his manager that Cristiano Ronaldo was leaving Juventus for Manchester City, of all clubs, the Red Devils decided to take action.

United have pulled Ronaldo’s comeback out of the bag, announcing he will return to Hollywood on transfer deadline day.

Solskjaer then posed for a photo with his former team-mate, both with smiles on their faces. The prodigal son is finally home.

Ronaldo’s second spell at United couldn’t have started better in a 4-1 win at Old Trafford in a sensational stadium.

The veteran scored his team’s first two goals on the day, seemingly never leaving him.

The goals will keep coming for Ronaldo, who has always robbed them given his impressive record over the years.

However, it soon became clear that Solskjaer, who at the time was doing a steady but unspectacular job as a manager, was unable to get his team to work with him.

Ronaldo would go on to score seven goals while playing for the 49-year-old, but it wasn’t enough to get his old friend axed.

As results continued to deteriorate, the Glazers took action and decided to sack the legendary United man in a difficult decision for all involved.

“I love Solskjaer,” he told Piers Morgan in an interview last week.

“I think he was the best, because what I keep in my heart is the heart of a person, and for me, Ole is the best.

“Coach? Of course, he didn’t look for what he wanted. It’s hard to predict after Sir Alex Ferguson, but I think he did well and he needs more time.

“I have no doubt that he will be a good coach in the future, but it was a good experience. Although it was a short time, I was very happy to work for him.”

After United sacked Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick stepped in.

A man who, according to Ronaldo, had never heard of him before his appointment.

“I’ve never seen him as a boss because I’ve seen some things that I’ve never agreed with, and he’s also stopping the clock, because if you’re not a coach, you’re going to lose in the next five years. Being a coach has really surprised me.” he told Morgan.

“But by the same token, it doesn’t surprise me too much because if you look at the structures, they stay the same.

“So the coaches didn’t surprise me, but it was a difficult time not only for me but for the other players.”

Behind the scenes, Ronaldo knew Rangnick was telling United’s chiefs that they needed to get rid of their No.7 position at the end of the season.

It’s something he’s publicly denied, but it can lead to couples having an awkward, or professional, relationship.

Cristiano Ronaldo had an uneasy relationship with Ralf Rangnick at Man United

Ronaldo repeatedly ignored Rangnick’s blushes and scored 24 goals in all competitions, more than any other player.

However, in an age where youth and energy are needed to win titles, it was clear week after week that Ronaldo could do more harm than good.

At the end of last season, when Erik ten Hag was confirmed to take over, Ronaldo said he wanted to leave United.

Although the Red Devils tried to force him out, he and Jorge Mendes tried to end the veteran’s romantic relationship with United.

Ronaldo missed the pre-season for personal reasons as he said he was dealing with his young daughter’s hospitalization.

But when he returned, it became clear that he wasn’t part of Ten Ha’s plan.

But Ronaldo has done little to demonstrate his worth at United this term. He has a poor record of three goals, two of which came against Sheriff in the Europa League.

Before Cristiano Ronaldo left Man United, he never visited Erik ten Hag

Ten Hag currently favors Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, but the pair lack Ronaldo’s killer instinct.

But now the relationship is over.

United have agreed to part ways with Ronaldo, who looks set to embark on one last adventure before hanging up his boots.

If Portugal win the World Cup in Qatar, it could happen this winter, there’s no denying it.

It wasn’t meant to be when Ronaldo returned last summer after years of dreaming.

But football is a cruel business. He will always be a legend and fans should remember his first spell much more than this disastrous second.
