The Dallas Cowboys are playing virtually with matches leading up to Thursday’s game in New Orleans, with COVID-19 infections rising again on the team.

The right game, Terence Steele, was among the positive tests for COVID-19 and will not play against the Saints, coach Mike McCarthy said on Sunday.

Offensive line coach Joe Philbin and assistant strength and conditioning coach Kendall Smith, who missed the loss of Thanksgiving in Las Vegas after a positive rehearsal, will not go to New Orleans.

Three more staff members will face the Saints as strength and fitness coordinator Harold Nash Jr., Assistant Offensive Coach Jeff Blasco and Offensive Assistant Scott Tolzien.

The Cowboys will be missing members of their team due to the coronavirus for the third time in four games. Running backs coach Skip Pete came out against Atlanta on November 14.

McCarthy said players show up at the facility on Sunday to test and eat and make sure their equipment is set for personal training in the afternoon. He said he had a similar plan for Monday, the hardest workout the day before the trip to New Orleans.

The NFL implemented stricter tests and other protocols for the days after Thanksgiving. McCarthy said the club has been testing every day since Saturday.

“We are part of the new protocol and I’m not sure if this is exactly what the league intends to start on Thanksgiving,” McCarthy said. “We are currently in a cycle where we are paying a lot of attention to it.

McCarthy said successor Amari Cooper is expected to rejoin the team on Monday after missing the last two games after a positive COVID-19 test. Cooper was not vaccinated and had to be out for at least 10 days.

This epidemic for the Cowboys is similar to the one that struck in the pre-season and at the beginning of the regular season. Right-back Zack Martin and defender Randy Gregory missed a game after a positive test. Defense coordinator Dan Quinn is absent for a pre-season game.

Coronavirus problems first reappeared earlier this month when kicker Greg Zuerline missed a game after entering the records.

Steele’s absence should mean that La’el Collins returns to his original job with a proper grip. Collins did not get his job back after serving a five-game sentence for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Collins did start once after recovering from Tyrone Smith’s ankle injury, but Smith came back against the Raiders. Steele, who had taken Smith’s place, returned to the right.
