Edouard Mendy breaks Sadio Mane’s POTY strangehold
Premier League giants Chelsea have, on Monday evening, confirmed that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has secured for himself a highly sought after individual prize.
Pensioners standout
Senegalese shot-stopper Mendy has of course proven something of a revelation over the course of the last 18 months.
After making the move to Stamford Bridge in a somewhat under the radar move from Stade Rennais in the summer of 2020, the 29-year-old was expected to act as backup to, before eventually providing competition for the underperforming Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Few, in turn, could have predicted just how significant an impact Mendy would ultimately go on to make in west London.
The gifted goalkeeper quickly went about usurping Kepa as Chelsea’s first-choice between the posts, on his way to 31 Premier League appearances across the length of last season.
Not only that, but his starring performances on the continent also proved crucial in the Blues’ eventual Champions League triumph back in May.

POTY
Despite something of a recent blip, Mendy’s fine form has since continued into the early months of the current campaign, too, with the one-time Marseille man continuing to act as an integral member of Thomas Tuchel’s setup.
And, as alluded to above, on Monday, the 29-year-old has seen his standout efforts altogether deservedly rewarded.
As confirmed by Chelsea themselves, Mendy has been named as the Senegalese Player of the Year for 2021.
The shot-stopper comfortably beat out 2nd-placed Sadio Mane to the award (321 votes to 99), voted for by journalists in the country, breaking a reported streak of six successive triumphs on the part of the Liverpool star.
