Manchester City have signed Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for £45m.

The 26-year-old England international has signed a six-year contract with the Premier League champions.

He becomes Pep Guardiola’s third summer signing following the arrivals of Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega Moreno.

“I am very happy to be joining Manchester City. City have again proven themselves as the best team in the country,” said Phillips.

Phillips, who made 235 appearances over eight seasons at Elland Road, still has two years remaining on his Leeds contract.

He said City had “an extraordinary squad and a manager in Pep Guardiola who is considered the best in the world”.

He added: “To be able to play under Pep and learn from him and his coaching staff and be part of a fantastic squad is a prospect I am very excited about.”

Phillips made his international debut in September 2020 and was named England’s Men’s Player of the Year 2020-21, having played every game in the postponed Euro 2020 tournament.

A key player under former boss Marcelo Bielsa, Phillips played 37 times in the Championship during the 2019-20 season as Leeds were promoted to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

He spent a long time on the sidelines last season with a hamstring injury, making just 20 league appearances.

City director of football Txiki Begiristain added: “His reading of the game, alongside his passing ability, energy and drive makes him a formidable talent and he is a player who has a fantastic desire to win.

“We feel he will be a great addition to our squad and he will complement our game perfectly.”

‘You gave me everything’
Phillips wrote an open letter to Leeds and its fans after his departure was confirmed, paying special praise to the former Bielsa boss.

“I can’t mention Leeds without mentioning one special person – Marcelo,” Phillips wrote. “The best manager I have ever met. He is the one who gives the club life, he gives the players and everyone involved at the club the belief that we are good enough to return to the Premier League after 16 years.

“Not only did you give the club everything but you also gave me everything I needed to become the person I am today on and off the pitch.”

He also praised new manager Jesse Marsch as an “amazing” boss and “an even better person”.

Phillips added he hopes fans understand his decision to leave to “pursue his dream”, saying: “As a young boy I had so many dreams and still do… but playing for you is something I will never forget”.

Leeds recruits Gyabi from City
In a separate deal, Leeds United have signed Man City youngster Darko Gyabi on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 18-year-old centre-half helped City U18s to the Premier League title North in the 2020/21 campaign after graduating from Millwall academy in 2018.

He played for City’s Under-23 team last season, making 10 appearances and scoring one goal.

Gyabi has won 12 caps for the England youth team and becomes Leeds’ fourth summer signing after Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca.
