Manchester United are firmly on the radar of new Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who is already looking forward to the prospect of taking on the Red Devils.

Erling Haaland is already enjoying his first Manchester derby and the chance to face the Red Devils.

Manchester City’s new kid is looking to win the Premier League after making a trade from Borussia Dortmund in an initial £51.2m deal. Haaland is arguably the hottest property in world football and wants to prove his worth in England’s top flight.

He scored 86 times in 89 games for Dortmund, having previously excelled at Red Bull Salzburg. The 21-year-old will now lead City’s attack under Pep Guardiola, despite the champions not playing a recognized number 9 for nearly two years. Haaland is tipped to be a huge asset in the final third and is excited to face those in Manchester’s red half.

When asked who he is most looking forward to playing, he replied: “I don’t like to say the words, but… Manchester United.” Haaland’s father Alfe-Inge played for City and Leeds United during his time as a professional in England. Both teams enjoy fierce rivalries with Manchester United and his father may well have passed that back to his son.

It was also at Old Trafford that Alfe-Inge suffered a horrific injury after being tackled by Roy Keane. City completed a one-two over United last season, winning 2-0 away from home and then 4-1 at the Etihad.

Haaland is one of City’s two new forwards, along with young Argentine Julian Alvarez. Gabriel Jesus left as a result and the Norwegian was awarded shirt 9 – which he declared a “dream come true”.

He said: “I am delighted to have been presented with the number 9. It has been part of my history over the last two years, both at club level and with the national team and I am looking forward to continuing that at City. It’s a shirt every striker wants and wearing it at one of the best clubs in the world is a dream come true. I can’t wait to get started.”

Haaland’s release clause allowed him to leave Dortmund this summer. At City, however, he is thinking long term and has expressed his desire to at least fulfill his contract. He said when asked about his stay at Etihad: “At least five years. I signed a five-year contract, so we have to start with that.

“In a way, my progress was fast, but also not when you look at my performance. It was a big step to go to Molde from my hometown club, it was a big step to go to Salzburg, Dortmund and now England. But it’s going well. I’ve really taken a risk. I’ve been thinking about a lot of things every time and now I’m looking forward to it.”
