West Ham made an offer to take Gabriel Barbosa on loan for 18 months – with an option to make the deal permanent for £25m – earlier this window; the proposal remains on the table and the forward wants to move to England; however, Flamengo do not want to lose Barbosa

Gabriel Barbosa is set to tell Flamengo that he wants to leave the club and move to England, with West Ham keen to sign the striker.

The Hammers made an 18-month loan offer for Barbosa – with the option to make the transfer permanent for €30m (£25m) – earlier this month, and that proposal is still on the table.

However, Flamengo does not want to sell or lend Barbosa this month. The 25-year-old scored 104 goals in 147 matches for the Brazilian team

But Barbosa is keen to leave the club and is due to meet his representatives and Flamengo officials on Thursday, where he will make clear his desire to move to England.

It is understood that Barbosa believes a move to the Premier League could help him cement his role as a leading striker for Brazil ahead of this winter’s World Cup.

The forward also believes he has unfinished business in Europe after a disappointing spell at Inter Milan.

Barbosa spent three and a half years as an Inter player – plus six months on loan at Benfica – between 2016 and 2020, but has scored just two goals in just 15 appearances.

The Brazilian is one of a number of forwards interested in an important post this month.

‘The hammers move improbably but strange things have happened’
South American football expert Tim Vickery:

“I think it is very unlikely that he will join West Ham this month. First of all, what does the player want. I know it has been reported that he is about to tell his Flamengo team, where he has been so successful for the past three years, that he wants out. If he That’s right, that would be a bombshell because the exact opposite is being reported here in Brazil.

“He was sitting with the new head coach, ex-QPR head coach, Swansea and Leicester boss Paulo Sousa and talking about how much he wants to show up this year. Does he want to rock the boat in a World Cup year? He’s in the Brazil team so he wants to risk losing momentum with a move in this stage.

“Flamingo don’t want to sell and they don’t need to sell and I don’t think they would be interested in a loan move with a buy option. You have to pay the £30m. Do West Ham really want to pay the £30m over 25 years as nobody really knows if Can he do it at that level? And while he’s made some progress in his emotional intelligence, he doesn’t really look like David Moyes’ character. Right now, I’d say it’s unlikely but strange things have happened.”
