Harness racing selections: Saturday January 22

Two meetings to look at on Saturday night, with Tabcorp Park Menangle and Ballarat getting my attention. Down below is best bets for the respective programs.

Tabcorp Park Menangle
Best Bet: Race 2, Number 9, Krug

High class Kiwi for Cran Dalgety that I think will be too sharp for these despite the wide gate. He brings with him some A1 form from New Zealand and arrives in winning form after a strong win at Cambridge. Likely has to do work from a tricky gate, but I just think class gets him home.

Next Best: Race 5, Number 2, Madrid
Great to see her back at the races and confident she can resume a winner. Brilliant filly that ended last prep with five wins on the bounce, the last run being a Group l romp in a blistering mile rate for her age. No public trials to get ready, but she has class, quality, gate speed and should prove too good.

Value: Race 6, Number 3, Always Rockin
Tricky race this, but the map looks idea for him to run an improved race at odds. Far from disgraced in defeat last Saturday here behind one of the best Queensland has to offer, Colt Thirty One, after getting a mile back on the pegs. He should land box seat behind the leader here and be dangerous at a price.

Ballarat
Best Bet: Race 2, Number 11, Vacation Hill

Bad luck is the only way this girl gets beat. Former Kiwi that makes her Australian debut for Andy Gath and we know his record with these NZ trotters is as good as we have seen in this country. This mare brings with her some elite NZ trotting form and despite a second row draw, she’s clearly the one to beat.

Next Best: Race 4, Number 1, HI Manameisjeff
Should be a procession from the front for this guy. Had to do work to find the front last Saturday at Shepparton but once he found the top, it was race over and he gapped them, running good time from the front. Drawn the pole, he should lead pretty comfortably and take beating.

Value: Race 7, Number 8, Torrid Saint
I think he’s the one at stupid odds. Just outsprinted two back at Bendigo before locking wheels and losing all hope at Shepparton last time. The start will be crucial, whether Spirit Of St Louis holds up. If he does, this guy can get leaders back and at a big price, likely a 1×3 play, he’s worth a speck.
