Brighton star Leandro Trossard has explained his motivation behind his form against Liverpool after his recent hat-trick.
The Reds dropped another two points in the Premier League clash against Brighton as they were held to a 3-3 draw in their first match back after the international break. Roberto Firmino scored a brace, with an Adam Webster own goal giving Liverpool a third, but the Reds could not hold on for a win.
A Trossard hat-trick prevented Liverpool from securing all three points. He put Brighton 2-0 up in the first half, before equalising in the latter stages of the contest.
Trossard has now scored five goals in his seven appearances against Liverpool. He was also on the scoresheet in the 2-2 draw at Anfield last season.
Speaking after the match, Trossard has admitted that he tries to “show himself” more in big games against the likes of Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp has admitted he is missing Sadio Mane and provided further clarity around the forward’s departure from Liverpool during the summer.
Having joined the Reds in 2016, Mane scored 120 goals from 269 appearances as he helped Klopp’ s side win every major honour on offer. However, the forward, whose contract was due to expire next summer, decided to call time on his Anfield career after last season’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Pushing for a move to Bayern Munich, the Senegal international ended up joining the Bundesliga giants in a deal worth up to £35m. However, Liverpool have struggled since his departure. But when asked about the departure of Mane from his squad, Klopp appeared to hit back at suggestions that his side’s mixed form so far this season is down to the former Southampton man’s departure.
Jurgen Klopp admits he was never convinced Liverpool would see it through after fighting back from two goals down before being held 3-3 by Brighton.
Roberto Firmino scored twice either side of half-time to cancel out Leandro Trossard’s early brace before Adam Webster’s own goal, just after the hour mark, gave the home side the lead.
With less than 10 minutes remaining, however, Trossard became the first opposition player since Andrey Arshavin in 2009 to register a hat-trick at Anfield and Klopp says he was never truly of the belief that he side could hold on at 3-2 given their shortage of confidence at present and the nerves around the stadium.
Fans of the narrative were rubbing their hands together in anticipation,, writes Ian Doyle.
With mere minutes remaining and Fabinho having been dumped to the turf some 25 yards from the Brighton and Hove Albion goal, the stage was set for Trent Alexander-Arnold to end a difficult week with a defining statement.
But that his curling free-kick was kept out by Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at full stretch was perhaps fair reflection of the afternoon for both Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool in general.
Let’s make no bones it. The right-back had an absolute shocker here, his start in keeping with a dreadful Liverpool opening that saw Jurgen Klopp ’s side given the runaround by the visitors, playing their first game under new boss Robert De Zerbi.
Liverpool player ratings for the Premier League home game against Brighton at Anfield as Roberto Firmino scores twice but the Leandro Trossard gets a hat-trick at Anfield.

In 10 Premier League matches against today’s opponents Brighton, Mo Salah has scored six times and registered five assists.
Could Salah add to his two Premier League goals so far this season and help Liverpool to another win?
Luis Suarez has highlighted how Uruguay team-mate Fede Valverde “reminds” him of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard and Suarez were team-mates at Liverpool for three years with the ex-Reds skipper previously describing the striker as the “best player” he’s ever played with.
Real Madrid midfielder Valverde has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent times, but it seems unlikely Madrid would be willing to let the star leave. Suarez has spoken of the talents of the 24-year-old.
Reports broke on Friday of Christopher Nkunku’s “secret medical” ahead of a move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023, but the club are still yet to strike a deal with RB Leipzig for the talented Frenchman.
However, Liverpool are said to not be giving up on potentially signing the attacker, who has a release clause of £52 million.
An ideal Firmino replacement?
After almost a month since participating in a Premier League match, Liverpool are back in business as Brighton visit Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were last involved in a top-flight fixture away to Everton on September 3, a match which ended in a goalless draw thanks to the heroics of Jordan Pickford between the sticks. The Reds will be all too aware of the importance of returning to winning ways will bring as they look to kick-start their season after a sluggish start.
Brighton make the trip to Merseyside without Graham Potter as new manager Roberto De Zerbi takes charge of his first match in charge of the Seagulls since being appointed earlier this month.
After scoring for Uruguay during the international break, Darwin Nunez is ready to return to Premier League action and add to his single goal he has scored in the league this season.
Liverpool are reportedly “preparing” a “crazy offer” in an attempt to sign Real Madrid star Fede Valverde as the search for a new midfielder goes on.
The European champions are said to be unwilling to let one of their key men leave the club, but Liverpool ‘s rumoured offer would be too much for them to turn down.
Jurgen Klopp ‘s side were interested in Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco in the summer, but the France international chose to sign for Madrid.
According to Fichajes, Liverpool are willing to submit a crazy offer of £132 million for Real Madrid star Fede Valverde as Jurgen Klopp’s carries on searching for a new midfielder.
The Uruguayan has impressed during his time in Spain and his versatility is something that would fit in very well in the Liverpool midfield.
Is this a player you would like to see pull on a Liverpool shirt?
Finally, Premier League action is back as Liverpool will take on Brighton at Anfield at 3pm today. Brighton currently sit in fourth place and a win for the Reds will move them to within one point of the Seagulls.
