MADRID (AP) — Chelsea’s Champions League title defense came to an end despite a 3-2 win against Real Madrid on Tuesday, with Karim Benzema ruining the England side’s comeback by scoring in extra time to send the Spanish side back into the semifinals.

Benzema scored a hat-trick in the first leg to give Madrid a 3-1 lead, then scored the decisive goal at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium with a header from Vinícius Júnior’s cross six minutes into extra time.

The hosts looked beaten after a 3-0 loss in regulation, but substitute Rodrygo leveled the aggregate score in the 80th minute and Madrid found a way to reach the last four for the 10th time in the last 12 seasons.

Chelsea had beaten Madrid early and built the lead through goals from Mason Mount in the 15th minute, Antonio Rüdiger in the 51st and Timo Werner in the 75th.

Madrid will next face either Manchester City or Atlético Madrid, who will play on Wednesday in the Spanish capital with City maintaining a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

In Tuesday’s other quarter-finals, modest Spanish side Villarreal advanced past Bayern Munich 2-1 on aggregate after drawing 1-1 in the second leg in Germany.

The defeat will add to the turmoil off the pitch for Chelsea amid the forced sale of the club following sanctions in England against oligarchic owner Roman Abramovich following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Chelsea sit in third place in the Premier League, five points clear of Tottenham in final Champions League spots with a game in hand.
