Kalvin Phillips speaks out over Leeds future amid Man United links

Phillips ‘very happy’ to remain at Leeds

Kalvin Phillips; born and bred in Leeds and already quite possibly a club legend after his meteoric rise through the ranks at Elland Road, looks set to remain amid speculation surrounding his future.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Phillips is ‘very happy’ at the club under Marcelo Bielsa, despite the difficult start to the 2021-22 Premier League campaign that sees the Whites sitting in 16th and just five points clear of the drop zone.

“I just want to focus on getting back fit. But I speak to the owner [Andrea Radrizzani] regularly. I want a new contract. I’m very happy here”, Phillips has assured.

The news comes on the back of Manchester United logging interest in the England international, whose profile has exploded while starring in the heart of the Leeds midfield since last season. Phillips was also a key catalyst for England’s recent international success under Gareth Southgate, and should he remain at Leeds, it stands as a testament to the fact that club loyalty is not completely dead in the modern game.

Early struggles in 2021-22 for Bielsa’s men

The current 2021-22 Premier League campaign is hardly one to remember at the minute for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, who have failed to improve on their credible position last season, after finally climbing back into the top-flight of English football.

But for Phillips, the fact that Leeds are no longer newcomers in the league is a disadvantage for the club; one that they must learn to cope with moving forward.

“One of the main things is that we’ve now played every team before. We are not new any more. A lot of teams are coming to us and knowing how to play against us. They are changing their formation two or three times every game, and it does cause us disruption in the way we play. There is a bit of confusion.

We’ve played like this for four years and I can honestly say we’re not doing as well as last year, but I also think we’ve been quite unlucky. Some games we’ve lost in the dying minutes, we maybe could have dealt with them better.

I’m not a person to blame people or blame the manager. I’m more a person who blames myself. I want to do as best as I possibly can for the team. But when I’m sat here injured I can’t do that.”

Whether or not that adaptation will come in time this season remains to be seen, but it would certainly be heartbreaking for a devoted Leeds fanbase if they managed to get themselves relegated just two years after a return to the promised land.
