The performance-based add-on, which can cost upwards of €80 million, remains to be agreed, as well as the personal terms of the player, and a source close to the negotiations told ESPN the deal is not finalized and there are still “significant” hurdles to overcome.

However, there is now growing confidence at Old Trafford and Camp Nou that a deal could be finalized to make De Jong the Ten Hag administration’s first signing at United.

The Netherlands international is Ten Hag’s main transfer target. There is hope he can be on the plane when the squad departs for a tour of Thailand and Australia on 8 July.

Sources at Barca also admit they are closer to reaching an agreement, but say the final figure remains to be determined, both in terms of fixed and additional costs.

However, there is an acceptance that the total package will not reach the €100m they originally asked for when talks began between the two clubs.

The same source added that they “don’t believe” the potential transfer will be completed by June 30 (Thursday), which is when the club closed their accounts for the 2021-22 campaign.

Barca still need to raise money this week to avoid ending the year on a loss, but hope to do so through the sale of their 10% LaLiga broadcasting rights.

De Jong has publicly and privately said he would prefer to stay at Barca – as former coach Ronald Koeman reiterated on Monday – but could be forced to reconsider his position given the Catalan club’s push to move him.

Barca paid €75 for De Jong when they signed him from Ajax in 2019 for an additional €11 million.

United are looking to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic at the end of the season. Matic joined Roma on a free transfer while Pogba will join Juventus.

Ten Hag worked with De Jong at Ajax and is desperate to bring the 25-year-old to United. Barcelona also want to let the player go in a bid to address their financial problems and fund other transfer business this summer.

Brazilian winger Antony is on the list of potential targets, but so far United have been put off by an €80m valuation from Ajax. United believe the near-€40m fee is more in line with the 22-year-old’s market value, but Ajax have made it clear they are under no pressure to offload the forward despite the player pushing for any offer to be seriously considered.

Sources have also told ESPN that United are waiting to hear from Christian Eriksen about where he will play next season. United have been pushed by Tottenham to back out of the deal, but Eriksen has also had an offer from Brentford, where he spent the second half of last season.
