The Glazer family have issued a statement confirming they are open to offers for Manchester United as they seek new buyers as part of either a partial or full investment

Manchester United has been put up for sale – the club’s owners the Glazer family have confirmed.

Reports emerged earlier on Tuesday that the Glazers had begun the process of seeking outside investment, either as a partial sale or a full-scale takeover – on the same day the club terminated the contract of Cristiano Ronaldo. A statement issued by the Glazers to the New York Stock Exchange has clarified the reports and confirmed the next steps the club are taking in the process.

The statement read: ” Manchester United plc, one of the most successful and historic sports clubs in the world, announces today that the Company’s Board of Directors is commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives for the club.

“The process is designed to enhance the club’s future growth, with the ultimate goal of positioning the club to capitalise on opportunities both on the pitch and commercially.

“As part of this process, the Board will consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the Company. This will include an assessment of several initiatives to strengthen the club, including stadium and infrastructure redevelopment, and expansion of the club’s commercial operations on a global scale, each in the context of enhancing the long-term success of the club’s men’s, women’s and academy teams, and bringing benefits to fans and other stakeholders.

“Executive Co-Chairmen and Directors, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer said “The strength of Manchester United rests on the passion and loyalty of our global community of 1.1 billion fans and followers. As we seek to continue building on the Club’s history of success, the Board has authorised a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives.[-reborn-rich-ep-4-hdkseries

“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximises the significant growth opportunities available to the Club today and in the future. Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders.”

The statement added: “The Raine Group is acting as the Company’s exclusive financial advisor and Latham & Watkins LLP is legal counsel to the Company. Rothschild and Co. is acting as exclusive financial advisor to the Glazer family shareholders.

“There can be no assurance that the review being undertaken will result in any transaction involving the Company. Manchester United does not intend to make further announcements regarding the review unless and until the Board has approved a specific transaction or other course of action requiring a formal announcement.”

The Glazers have presided over an ill-fated 17-year reign of United since their leveraged buyout of the club was completed in May 2005. Sections of United fans have continually protested against the Glazers throughout that time in dispute of their use of loans which has loaded the club with debt worth around £500million and cost over £1billion to service.

The American tycoons have also frequently taken dividends out of United despite putting little of their own money into the club. In recent years, the protests against the Glazers’ ownership have become more prevalent and fierce, with fans breaking into Old Trafford and forcing the postponement of the match against Liverpool in May last year the tip of the iceberg.

Various pundits have hit out at the Glazers, particularly Gary Neville, who criticised the way they had let the club fall behind their rivals with a lack of investment in the stadium and training facilities. Those factors were a point of discussion in the explosive interview which led to Ronaldo’s exit, after the striker claimed the Glazers “don’t care” about the club.

United become the latest Premier League club to be put on the market after the sale of Chelsea to a consortium led by Todd Boehly earlier this year, while Liverpool have also recently been put up for sale by their owners Fenway Sports Group.

Presumably the boom in value of Premier League clubs has tempted the Glazers into seeking new investment, with Chelsea fetching an initial £2.85billion. The Glazers bought United for £790m and have appointed the same company, the Raine Group, as Chelsea did to oversee the sale.

Cristiano Ronaldo to lose £16m in Man Utd wages as nature of exit talks emerge

Manchester United have agreed to terminated Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract by mutual consent after his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, with the forward leaving the club with immediate effect

Cristiano Ronaldo has been sacked by Manchester United after trashing the club and boss Erik ten Hag in a bombshell interview.

Ronaldo and United agreed mutually to end the forward’s contract seven months early, meaning the 37-year-old will lose out on £16million in lost wages United took the decision to terminate Ronaldo’s contract after he accused the club of “betrayal” and then declared he had “no respect” for Ten Hag.

Roanldo also accused the club of trying to force him out and claimed there had been “zero progress” at United since he left for the first time in 2009. Sources at United said it had been a “clean break” with Ronaldo, with the iconic forward now free to join a new club without any restrictions.

United released a statement which read: “ Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.

“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

Ronaldo released a statement confirming his exit by mutual consent and said: “Following conversations with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to end our contract early. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never, ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.

“I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”

The news broke as Ronaldo continued preparations in Qatar for Portugal’s World Cup opener against Ghana on Thursday. Ronaldo’s last game for United was as captain in a 3-1 win at Aston Villa on November 6.

Ten Hag dropped him for United’s Premier League game at Chelsea last month after he refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham three days earlier. Ronaldo’s former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand said: “Cristiano obviously did that interview with the mindset that he wasn’t happy and wanted to get out of the club. He made that very clear.

“I think Erik ten Hag got what he wanted in this situation as well. Both parties are happy and we can move on.

“The next chapter for Cristiano? It depends what his motivation is. Play in the Champions League? Money? To continue playing somewhere with a nice climate?

“We’ll find out in due course.”
