Manchester United are making late enquiries to try and sign a midfielder before this evening’s 11pm deadline.

United have been rocked by news that Christian Eriksen faces several months out of action with an ankle injury. It is feared that he could be sidelined until early-May.

United, as a result, are light on options in midfield, especially with Donny van de Beek already out for the rest of the season, and desperately need to find a replacement from somewhere. Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer is being reported as a potential option.

Meanwhile, striker Charlie McNeill has already left Old Trafford today and has joined League Two side Newport County on loan for the remainder of the season. Di’Shon Bernard is also set to leave on loan before the bell and join Portsmouth.

Elsewhere, United are continuing to step up their preparations ahead of tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. The Reds are 3-0 up following the first-leg last Wednesday at the City Ground.

United want to add a central-midfielder to their ranks ahead of the transfer window closing at 11pm this evening.

The Reds have been rocked by the news that Christian Eriksen will be sidelined for several months and may be sidelined until early-May.

However, a source has said that there is “not much out there” with the window closing in just over nine hours.

United manager Erik ten Hag has played down the prospect of adding to his squad ahead of tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline day.

The Reds have been rocked by the news that Christian Eriksen faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury, leaving them light on midfield options.

Manager Erik ten Hag will be speaking to the media in a few minutes time, looking ahead to tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup clash with Nottingham Forest. It is scheduled to start at 12:30pm.

United have confirmed that midfielder Christian Eriksen will be sidelined for ‘an extensive period’ because of an ankle injury.

He was forced off during Saturday’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Reading and was pictured leaving Old Trafford on crutches.

A statement released by United this lunchtime said:

According to a report by ESPN, Barcelona are ‘interested’ in signing United winger Anthony Elanga on loan ahead of this evening’s 11pm deadline.

It is reported that the Spanish giants are currently ‘debating’ whether to add another forward to their squad after offloading Memphis Depay earlier this month and losing Ousmane Dembele to injury.

Newport County have signed United striker Charlie McNeill on loan for the remainder of the season.

It marks the striker’s first loan spell away from Old Trafford and he will benefit from earning regular first-team football.

The transfer window slams shut in 12 hours time. Keep the blog locked for all the very latest United-related news ahead of the deadline.

Though nothing can ever be ruled out on deadline day, United are not expected to add to their ranks before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

The club has strengthened both its goalkeeping and attacking departments this month, signing Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst respectively. However, that is where United’s January recruitment drive is expected to stop, though Erik ten Hag, last week, refused to rule out the possibility of the club making a move for somebody if an opportunity developed.

Our writer George Smith on Casemiro’s attacking threat: “At first glance, such is Casemiro’s stereotypical characteristics and style of play, it is a tally that you would not expect, nor think possible, for the Brazilian. He is renowned for being a player that loves to sit deep and do the dirty side of the game, attempting to keep the defensive line behind him in order.

“However, when breaking down the 30-year-old’s season-on-season statistics from his time at Real Madrid, it becomes apparent that his attacking contributions this term should not, in fact, be all that surprising. In four of his eight full seasons as a Madrid player he got into double figures for goals and assists, with his highest tally of direct goal contributions coming in 2020/21 when he racked up 13, scoring seven times and registering six assists.”

United centre-back Di’Shon Bernard has agreed to join League One side Portsmouth on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 22-year-old is keen to secure first-team football between now and the end of the campaign and is set to undergo a medical with Portsmouth this morning.

United have no plans to let club captain Harry Maguire leave the club ahead of this evening’s 11pm transfer deadline.

The defender has been linked with a surprise move to Italian giants Inter Milan but wants to stay at the club and try and win his first trophy in United colours.

The former Sheffield United and Leicester City defender, however, is likely to assess his future in the summer.

According to a report by the Mail, League One side Portsmouth are ‘in talks’ with United defender Di’Shon Bernard about the prospect of signing him on loan.

The centre-back, who spent last season on loan at Hull City, is keen to try and secure some first-team football ahead of this evening’s 11pm deadline and Pompey are said to be leading the chase for his signature.

Deji Sotona has returned to English football three years after he turned down a new deal with United.

The 20-year-old spent time with French club Nice, as well a loan move to Kilmarnock, but has now returned to the North West with Burnley.

It is understood he will begin life in their U21 side.

United could reportedly make a shock swoop for former Leeds star Raphinha.

The Mirror focuses on United’s deadline day plans and claims the Barcelona forward could be made available for transfer today.

United have reportedly received a whole host of loan offers for Anthony Elanga this month.

According to Fabrizio Romano, there is plenty of interest in the Sweden international but United are reluctant to let him leave.

Harry Maguire is set to stay amid reported interest from Inter Milan. Maguire, 29, has only started twice in the Premier League in the last five months but the expectation is he will stay at United for the remainder of the season.

Maguire is one of four senior centre halves available to United manager Erik ten Hag, who disputed the suggestion Maguire is fifth-choice in the department.

United goalkeeper Ondrej Mastny has signed for Northern Irish side Portadown on loan for the rest of the 2022/23 season.

The 20-year-old has made Premier League 2 appearances in each of the last three seasons and has also represented the club in the Youth Cup, Youth League and the EFL Trophy.

United are aiming to secure loan deals for some academy players before tonight’s transfer deadline.

The January transfer window will close tonight.

This deadline is the same for all major leagues in Europe. However, cut-off times do vary.

Clubs in all British leagues apart from Scotland will have their deadline set at 11pm.

Scottish leagues will be able to make transfers up until 11:59pm.

Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill has agreed to join League Two side Newport County on loan until the end of the season.

The Manchester Evening News understand that everything is in place for the 19-year-old to complete his deal before Tuesday’s deadline day.

McNeill has already trained with his new teammates and is excited to get started at his new club for the remaining few months of the season.

Manchester United are finalising their list of players to sell in the summer transfer window as they plan their approach for the next phase of their squad rebuild.

It is understood United have already identified a number of players deemed sellable as they look to comply with Uefa’s new financial sustainability rules.

United manager Erik ten Hag has prioritised a striker for the summer transfer window but it is understood United are planning to raise funds for other new arrivals by selling squad players.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Cardiff striker Gabriele Biancheri. The 16-year-old completed a medical over the weekend and is poised to join the club as a scholar.

Biancheri has been attracting plenty of interest from other top sides and was understood to be on Chelsea’s radar last summer, but it is United who have won the race to sign him.

The teenager made his debut for Cardiff’s U18 side in the FA Youth Cup earlier this season and has already trained with the Welsh club’s U21 side as well.
