Manchester United’s U18s won the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night.

United took the lead through captain Rhys Bennett in the first half, but Nottingham Forest scored an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. United responded to that disappointment with two Alejandro Garnacho goals in front of 67,492 at Old Trafford.

United last won the Youth Cup in 2011. Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison featured in that side, but the club’s latest youngsters, Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Dan Gore and Charlie McNeill, are now in the history books.

United extended their rich history in the prestigious competition after a memorable campaign led by manager Travis Binnion.

In transfer news, United have been linked to midfielder Frenkie de Jong this week and the Manchester Evening News understands the club have contacted Barcelona about De Jong’s potential availability.

De Jong is contracted to Barcelona until 2026, having joined the Catalan outfit from Ajax for £65million in 2019.

Manchester United might get ribbed by their rivals for celebrating a Youth Cup triumph like a senior honour, but there is a genuine reason why success in midweek could well provide the blueprint for the first-team to follow in the years ahead.

As the most successful side in the illustrious history of the youth tournament, it can be dangerous to presume United are entitled to future successes simply because of their past exploits.

This dangerous complacency has already hurt United before, with the club punished for taking their eye off the ball and presuming further talented youngsters would emerge from the famed academy system.

As Donny van de Beek battles to be fit for the final week of Everton’s battle for Premier League survival, there might be knowing nods from successive Manchester United managers who doubted his ability to cope with the demands of the English game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick both ignored the claims of Van de Beek for a place in a misfiring United midfield and both held similar concerns about his physicality in the centre of the pitch in the Premier League.

A January loan move to Everton was an ideal chance for Van de Beek to prove them wrong, but he’s not played in two months now and has made the bench for only one of the Toffees’ previous nine Premier League as he battles niggling injuries.

Cristiano Ronaldo has warned that Erik ten Hag will need time to be a success at Manchester United, though he retains hope that the club will challenge for trophies next season.

Despite Ronaldo’s goal-scoring exploits — for which he was crowned the Premier League’s Player of the Month for April — United have endured yet another dismal season and their trophy drought has now stretched to five years. One thing the club did manage to achieve, however, was their aim of hiring their next permanent manager before the end of the campaign, however.

It was announced that Ajax boss Ten Hag would take charge in the summer last month after a £1.75million fee was agreed to release him from his contract in Amsterdam. The 52-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Academy coach Neil Ryan will bring his long stint at Manchester United to an end this summer, the club has announced.

The United Under-23s assistant coach has been a staff member at the club for 19 years and has had a hand in the development of plenty of youngsters who have gone on to enjoy long careers. Ryan has worked with 39 players who made a first-team appearance for the club.

Ryan — the son of former United player and coach, Jim Ryan — first joined the club in 2003. He started working with the Under-11s and has risen through the ranks in the near two decades since, becoming Under-18s lead in 2018 before switching to a role as the Under-23s assistant at the start of the current season.

Manchester United have just one game left this season before the season can finally come to an end.

It’s been a dreary year full of frustration and embarrassment but Ralf Rangnick’s side can try and end on a high when they face Crystal Palace. A quirk of the fixture list, due to Chelsea’s participation in the FA Cup final, means United have a two-week break before the match and preparations have begun in training.

The players were put through their paces on Thursday and the club has released a series of photographs and a short clip from the session.

A number of Manchester United supporters have been left stunned after Cristiano Ronaldo was left off the list of nominees for the Premier League Player of the Season award.

The Portuguese international, who returned to Old Trafford from Juventus last summer, has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season, including 18 in the Premier League. He has been a shining light in what has been a bitterly disappointing campaign for the club.

Ronaldo, more often than not, has stepped up when United have needed someone to take a game by the scruff of the neck or inject a moment of brilliance this term. He scored hat-tricks against both Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City to secure 3-2 wins when United would have otherwise failed.

Manchester United might get ribbed by their rivals for celebrating a Youth Cup triumph like a senior honour, but there is a genuine reason why success in midweek could well provide the blueprint for the first-team to follow in the years ahead.

Manchester United football director John Murtough attended Tottenham’s 3-0 victory over Arsenal on Thursday night as United’s recruitment plans accelerate.

Murtough met incoming manager Erik ten Hag in Amsterdam on Thursday and then returned to England to attend additional recruitment meetings.

United are weighing up a possible deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and are aiming to sign another midfielder, at least one forward and a centre-back. Moves for a full-back and a goalkeeper are also under consideration, depending on outgoings.

Alejandro Garnacho stood in front of the Stretford End with his shirt off and his arms spread out, like a statue waiting to be saluted by his new worshippers.

This is a 17-year-old not exactly short on confidence, but when you’re training alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi before you’re even old enough to drink it probably comes with the territory.

For his first goal in Wednesday’s FA Youth Cup final, Garnacho borrowed Ronaldo’s ‘Siuuu’ celebration. For the clincher in injury-time, he soaked in the applause from his new, adoring public.

Manchester City have already ruined one of Manchester United’s transfer dreams this summer and they could do it again by beating their neighbours to Frenkie de Jong.

United never stood a chance but the fact that they missed out on Erling Haaland to their neighbours has to sting. The Norwegian sensation’s next move was supposed to be the drama of the transfer window, but City ensured it was cancelled before the pilot even aired. The Blues confirmed that they have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign the striker this summer, with the approximate total expenditure standing at £86million.

With Bayern Munich still having two great No.9s leading their lines, Barcelona lacking the financial muscle, Liverpool having a stacked attack, Paris Saint-Germain a circus and United not even having Champions League football to offer, there really was no other realistic option for Haaland. Even still, United would have loved to have signed such an elite-level player but they will have now have to watch his exploits unfold in the other half of Manchester.

Arsenal are the side ‘most interested’ in signing Napoli forward Victor Osimhen this summer, according to a report in Italy.

Sport Mediaset name United and Tottenham in the race to sign the 23-year-old, but claim Arsenal are currently the frontrunners to get him.

However, the report insists Napoli will demand at least €100m for their star striker.

Frenkie de Jong has already explained why he’d be open to a move to Manchester United this summer.

The Manchester Evening News revealed on Thursday that United have contacted Barcelona about De Jong’s availability. The Dutchman is contracted to Barcelona until 2026 but reports linking the midfielder with an exit from La Liga have intensified this week.

De Jong’s previous comments will provide United with plenty of encouragement. After the midfielder joined Barcelona in 2019, he opened up on the interest he’d received from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and he admitted he had joined Barcelona for the ‘challenge’, which suggests a new project with Ten Hag might tempt him.

Barcelona manager Xavi is happy to sell Frenkie de Jong this summer, according to a report.

Deportes Cuarto claim the Barca boss has endorsed the sale because he wants to refresh his midfield with additions such as out-of-contract Franck Kessie.

United are weighing up a potential £75million move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Incoming United manager Erik ten Hag has identified De Jong, 25, as an ideal target, having coached him at Ajax and the Manchester Evening News understands United have contacted Barcelona about De Jong’s potential availability.

Speaking of midfielders who could be on the move.

Fichajes claim Bayern Munich are the latest team to show an interest in signing Paul Pogba as a free agent at the end of the season.

Pogba will leave United for free in the coming weeks with Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid all interested in a move as well.

United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League could prevent them from signing Frenkie de Jong, according to a report.

The Mail warn De Jong has no desire to leave after settling at the Catalan club, and it’s also understood that he would be reluctant to join a team that isn’t playing in Europe’s elite competition.

Manchester United’s Under-18s replicated an iconic photograph following their 3-1 FA Youth Cup final win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Travis Binnion’s side got their hands on the trophy following an entertaining clash with Forest, in which Alejandro Garnacho scored two late goals to seal a historic win for the United youngsters. The Argentine scored twice in the closing stages after Joshua Powell had cancelled out skipper Rhys Bennett’s 13th minute header.

Garnacho put United 2-1 up with just 12 minutes of normal time remaining, converting a controversial penalty, before he added his second and the home side’s third in stoppage time. It capped off a memorable evening in front of a crowd of more than 70,000 people inside Old Trafford.

It’s so often the attacking talents who shine the brightest at youth level thanks to viral goals and eye-watering scoring stats, so it is a huge credit to Kobbie Mainoo that he still manages to attract attention in his central midfield role.

The 17-year-old has impressed all season with his combative performances in the midfield of the pitch, and in the Youth Cup final he shone again with the perfect balance of silk and steel.

His dazzling footwork bamboozled the Forest defence for the first chance of the game, and his physical presence in midfield was so often the downfall of the visitors’ promising attacks.

Manchester United are weighing up a potential £75million move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Incoming United manager Erik ten Hag has identified De Jong, 25, as an ideal target, having coached him at Ajax and the Manchester Evening News understands United have contacted Barcelona about De Jong’s potential availability.

Barcelona and United sources have suggested reports of an imminent deal are wide of the mark but United are determined to move swiftly for a midfielder to offset the imminent departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic. Pogba is believed to favour rejoining Juventus, despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
