Marnus Labuschagne rises to number on on ICC Test batter rankings

A fruitful start to the summer of cricket has seen Marnus Labuschagne leapfrog Joe Root to become the No.1 men’s Test batter in the world.

Although being somewhat fortunate with no balls and dropped catches in Adelaide, Labuschagne’s form has been brilliant – posting scores of 74, 103, and 51 so far across two Ashes Tests (along with zero not out in Australia’s tiny second innings chase in Brisbane).

On the ICC rankings, Labuschagne went from 894 to 912 overnight while Root dropped from 903 to 897.

Steve Smith remains in the third, ahead of Kane Williamson and Rohit Sharma. David Warner and Travis Head are the other two Aussies inside the top 10.

Pat Cummins remains the top bowler in the world, while Mitchell Starc moved up from seventh to sixth in the all-rounder rankings (West Indian Jason Holder is first).

Labuschagne’s Test average is now an astonishing 62.14.
