Lewis Hamilton can’t improve on his 14th start

Meaning, Leclerc’s lead in the standings was cut to 27 points over Verstappen when Ferrari took a double hit.

First, Carlos Sainz was thrown out on the first lap after colliding with McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo.

And then Leclerc, who looked poised to finish second, spun after hitting the pavement in the chicane when he tried too hard to catch up to the Dutchman.

While he made it back to the pits, another stop to check the damage resulted in him coming home in sixth place.

Verstappen, starting from pole, held his nerve in dry conditions as he made up for the two DNFs he suffered in Bahrain and Australia.

He also won Saturday’s sprint race and won bonus points for setting the fastest lap, making a total of 34 points from the weekend.

He said: “We were there and it looked like a strong weekend and as a team we did everything really well.

“Assessing the condition and knowing when to change tires, and judging the pace, everything was well managed.”

However, a miserable weekend for Hamilton was compounded when he saw team-mate George Russell finish in fourth place.

Meanwhile there was also an unexpected podium finish for Lando Norris, who is third in his McLaren behind Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

Norris said: “It was a great race. The team deserved it from where we were in the first race to score an incredible podium.

“It’s been hard work. A lot of time and effort went into it and we’ve been able to take advantage of these conditions, so the mix of hard work and this and that paid off.”
