Glenn Maxwell has lashed “absolutely disgusting” abuse directed at Royal Challengers Bangalore players after his productive Indian Premier League season came to an end.

Virat Kohli’s hopes of winning an elusive IPL title as RCB captain were dashed by a four-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in their elimination final.

Maxwell and Dan Christian, who both failed to fire in the loss, will now shift their attention to the Twenty20 World Cup.

Christian is a travelling reserve for the World Cup, while Maxwell shapes as one of Australia’s most important players after finding top form in the IPL.

The Victorian defended himself and Bangalore teammates after the defeat to Kolkata, responding to what he termed “unacceptable” online trolling.

“Some of the garbage that has been flowing on social media is absolutely disgusting! We are human beings,” Maxwell wrote on Twitter.

“Try being a decent person maybe instead of spreading abuse.

“Unfortunately there is some horrible people out there that make social media a horrible place to be.”

Maxwell’s innings of 15 in the final came after scores of 56, 50no, 57, 40 and 51no.

The allrounder and Josh Hazlewood, who has helped three-time champions Chennai Super Kings secure a spot in the final that begins at 1am AEDT on Saturday, have been Australia’s best performers in the second phase of the tournament.

Kolkata and Delhi Capitals, who are coached by Ricky Ponting and boast Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis in their squad, will clash on Thursday morning (AEDT) to decide who faces Chennai in the title decider.

Smith has been unable to cement his spot in Delhi’s XI during recent weeks, while Stoinis is hoping to return from a hamstring injury this week.

Sunil Narine was the match-winner with bat and ball for Kolkata, snaring the scalps of Kohli and Maxwell in a haul of 4-21 that restricted Bangalore to 7-138.

Narine then clobbered three sixes in one over by Christian, who conceded 29 runs in ten deliveries as Kolkata won with two balls to spare.

“Narine makes it look very easy, he bowled outstandingly well,” Kolkata captain Eoin Morgan said.

Kohli, who top-scored with 39, announced long ago he was stepping down as Bangalore skipper after this season.

“I have given my 120 per cent to this franchise and will continue giving it as a player on the field,” Kohli said.
