Egypt’s sports minister revealed on local radio on Monday that Mohamed Salah plans to renew his contract with Liverpool after months of speculation over the future of the Reds’ top scorer.

‘Salah’s direction now is to renew his contract with Liverpool,’ says Egypt’s sports minister

Mohamed Salah intends to renew his contract with Liverpool, Egypt’s sports minister Ashraf Sobhi revealed on local radio on Monday.

The 29-year-old soccer star is currently in negotiations that the Reds have been eagerly waiting for to renew his contract, which expires next year.

Sobhi told Egyptian radio that after he advised Salah to explore a future outside Liverpool, the forward said he planned to extend his stay at Anfield.

“I met Mohamed Salah at the airport after the end of the Senegal game and the failure to reach the World Cup final and told him to forget what happened and focus on what happened next,” Sobhi said, as reported by Metro. Egypt lost to Senegal on penalties last week, failing to secure a place at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

“I have advised him to continue his journey at a club other than Liverpool, but his direction now is to renew his contract with Liverpool,” the minister added.

After months of speculation, reports emerged last weekend that Salah was getting closer to a new deal with the Reds. It is believed he turned down a £400,000-a-week offer from the club in December.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said on Monday he was “pleased” with the current negotiations over Salah’s contract. “The decisive parties are talking to each other and that’s all I need.”

Salah – the Premier League’s top scorer – has scored 28 goals in 37 appearances for the Reds this season.
