Manchester United confirmed the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has already ruled out signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Manchester United on Tuesday. The Red Devils have confirmed that Ronaldo has left Old Trafford “with immediate effect” following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

United signed Ronaldo for the second time last summer after shelling out nearly £13m to sign him from Juventus. And he scored 24 goals in all competitions during his first season in England. But Ronaldo fell out of favor with new boss Erik ten Hag and started just four of the team’s 14 Premier League matches ahead of the World Cup.

According to CBS Sports Golazo, it is true that Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, approached Newcastle in an attempt to negotiate a move to St James’ Park for his client. But Newcastle’s current salary structure would not allow them to consider signing the Portuguese international, even if he took a pay cut. Howe is keen to maintain financial consistency amongst Newcastle’s top players, with none earning anything close to the amount Ronaldo takes home.

And Howe once said, “We’re trying to deliver long-term growth. At the moment, we have a very aged squad. We need to bring the average age down, so it might not be a hire we would necessarily look to make.”

Ronaldo won three Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup titles during his first spell at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, while also lifting the first of his five Ballon d’Ors. But his relationship with the club has deteriorated this season and the player told Morgan he felt “betrayed” by United before heading to the World Cup in Qatar.

The player also admitted that he had “no respect” for Ten Hag. And United confirmed that Ronaldo was no longer a Red Devils player, courtesy of a statement on Tuesday.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect,” reads the statement. “The club thanks him for his immense contribution in two spells at Old Trafford.”

And Ronaldo also released his own statement saying: “Following discussions with Manchester United, we have mutually agreed to terminate our contract early. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never change. However, it seems that the time is right to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the rest of the season and beyond.”

Ronaldo is now looking for a new club, but will have to wait until the January window opens to join another team, despite being a free agent. Like Newcastle, Chelsea, Napoli, Bayern Munich and Al-Nassr FC, from Saudi Arabia, they are strongly linked as possible next destinations for the Portuguese star.
