Owen Power becomes first Canadian defenceman to record hat trick at world juniors

Owen Power made history in Canada’s opener at the World Junior Hockey Championship on Sunday in Edmonton.

The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont. became the first Canadian defenceman in the history of the World Juniors to record a hat trick when he scored three goals in the first two periods against Czechia.

After Canada went down 3-1, Power scored an unassisted goal late in the first period. With Canada on an extended 5-on-3 power play in the second period, Power scored consecutive goals, putting the Canadian squad back out in front.

Power went first overall to the Buffalo Sabres in the 2021 NHL Draft. The teenager returned to the University of Michigan, where he has three goals and 13 assists through 26 games in the 2021-22 NCAA season.
