The Premier League has confirmed clubs will be allowed to make five substitutions from next season.

Clubs were permitted to make five changes for the remainder of the 2019-20 season after its restart following a three-month shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the majority of clubs voted to revert to the three-subs rule at the start of last season.

However, the Premier League confirmed the permanent rule change to five substitutions from the start of the 2022-23 season. The rule is already in place in the other four major leagues in Europe.

In a statement, the Premier League said: “Clubs agreed to change the rules relating to substitute players. From next season, clubs will be permitted to use five substitutions, to be made on three occasions during a match, with an additional opportunity at half-time. A total of nine substitutes can be named on the team sheet.”

United were believed to be in favour of keeping the five-subs rule at the start of last term. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick also voiced his support for its reintroduction in December.

“As far as I remember, the five substitutes were implemented, it was decided every team could substitute five players when Covid started one-and-a-half years ago and I think it was the right decision to do that, to have more options to change players, to save energy for players, especially if they had only just recovered from Covid,” Rangnick said.

“And the same is true right now, we have a similar situation to the one we had one-and-a-half years ago and therefore I wouldn’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be as it was one-and-a-half years ago.

“As far as I know in Europe, England is the only country where they only allow three subs. In the other four big leagues in Europe, you can substitute five players. And, on the other hand, you’re still allowed eight field players on the teamsheet, and if you have eight field players on the teamsheet you should be able to replace five, but you can only replace three of them. You will always have five players on the bench who cannot be substituted and cannot play.”

Midfielder Nemanja Matic has remained coy on Manchester United’s chances of a title push next season.

United are on course to finish outside the Champions League spots this season with the club four points off fourth-placed Arsenal having played a game more. A number of players have been subjected to fierce criticism in recent weeks, with United captain Harry Maguire booed by England fans at Wembley on Tuesday night.

When asked by talkSPORT about how far United are away from being a title-winning side, he said: “That’s a hard question. In football, I’ve seen so many things, everything can change in one month.

“Let’s see how the group will look next season and what will happen. In football, you cannot predict anything.

“I am confident that this changing room has a lot of good players and good characters. There is big potential.”

The former Serbia international has started just 10 Premier League games this season as United now begin to look for younger midfielders to take them forward. That said, Matic’s experience will have been invaluable to the squad.

Matic won two Premier League titles earlier in his career at Chelsea, though he remained cautious about his chances of winning one at Old Trafford, despite admitting there is a hunger within the squad. He added: “We are ready. I see everyone is motivated to do the best for this club. No one is here that wants to do bad.

“Let’s see, as I said, we need to finish this season in the best way and then we will do our best to be focused for the next one and try to win something.”

Manchester United are set to turn their attentions to Roma striker Tammy Abraham, according to reports. Having signed for the Italians from Chelsea last summer, Abraham has scored 23 goals in all competitions this season.

That form has brought about an England recall and Premier League interest. Arsenal have been heavily linked with the 24-year-old and United view him as an alternative to Benfica starlet Darwin Nunez.

According to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, key figures in the Old Trafford boardroom are keen on signing Abraham during the summer transfer window. However, there are complications in that respect.

The same report suggests United would be willing to pay around £76m for the Chelsea academy graduate, 12 months on from them bringing in Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. Roma paid £34m for Abraham last summer but they are not thought to be open to selling.

According to The Telegraph (via Football 365 ), United’s attention has shifted to Abraham due to Nunez holding out for a move to a side who can offer him Champions League football. Of course, United still have work to do in that regard.

Elsewhere, speculation over Kalvin Phillips remains high. However, amid interest from Aston Villa and links with United, the Leeds midfielder appears open to signing a new contract.

The Manchester Evening News understands United are set to prioritise midfield signings during the summer and Declan Rice is still seen as target number one. On the basis Paul Pogba leaves at the end of his contract, though, they could welcome further recruits in that position.

Phillips has been mooted as a possible option there. However, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Phillips is eager to agree fresh terms with Leeds – delivering a setback to Villa and United.

Manchester United get Premier League wish

The Premier League has confirmed clubs will be allowed to make five substitutions from next season, a move backed by United. United were believed to be in favour of keeping the five-subs rule at the start of last term. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick also voiced his support for its reintroduction in December alongside opposite numbers at Anfield and the Etihad.

Van Gaal doesn’t exactly have Hollywood appeal but he has been known to provide a few box office moments. The Dutchman diving on the touchline at Old Trafford to mock Arsenal’s theatrics instantly comes to mind. He also asked for apologies from members of the media just before Christmas 2015 before storming out of the press conference. Van Gaal was feeling the pressure of managing United.

There’s not much pressure on Van Gaal these days. The 70-year-old is the Netherlands’ national team boss and the demands of international management are nowhere near as testing as when coaching Barcelona, Bayern Munich or United. Holland had underachieved when he accepted the job last year and he’s set to lead them at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

World Cup 2022 takes place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18; 32 teams to compete in eight groups; England could face Germany or the Netherlands at group stage; follow Friday’s World Cup draw on skysports.com and the Sky Sports app

When and where is the 2022 World Cup?
The 2022 World Cup is taking place in Qatar in the winter months rather than the usual summer ones, due to the heat.

The tournament kicks off on Monday November 21 at the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor with a match that will feature the host country.

The final will be played at the Lusail Stadium in Doha a week before Christmas on Sunday December 18.

As hosts, Qatar received automatic qualification to next year’s tournament.

Four-time World Cup winners Germany were the first team to guarantee a spot through the qualification process in Europe, while Brazil – the most successful national team in World Cup history with five trophies – secured swift qualification as one of the top four teams in South America’s groups.

England secured their place in November by topping their qualifying group. Saudi Arabia and Japan became the latest nations to be confirmed in Qatar after the Samurai Blue beat Australia 2-0 on March 24.

Uruguay and Ecuador secured their spots at the World Cup finals, joining Brazil and Argentina as the automatic qualifiers from the South American group.

Peru clinched the play-off spot thanks to a 2-0 win against Paraguay in the final qualification game.

Canada qualified for the World Cup finals for just the second time, beating Jamaica 4-0 to book their ticket to Qatar and end 36 years of failure and heartache.

Mexico and the United States also qualified for the World Cup in their final qualifier, while Costa Rica will face New Zealand in a play-off in June for a spot in Qatar.

On Tuesday, Senegal, Ghana, Tunisia, Morocco and Cameroon booked their places at Qatar 2022. Sadio Mane scored the winning kick as Senegal beat Egypt 3-1 on penalties, with Mo Salah among the Egyptian players to miss their spot-kicks.

In Europe, Portugal and Poland progressed to the finals after winning their play-off finals against North Macedonia and Sweden respectively. The third and final European play-off, which will feature Wales against Scotland or Ukraine, has been delayed until June.
