Jose Mourinho is expected to dip back into the transfer market in January in an effort to revive Roma’s top four hopes, and a number of Premier League players are in his sights.
The Italian club are six points adrift of the Champions League places in Serie A but could be even further adrift without the goals of England striker Tammy Abraham.
Abraham was one of two Premier League players signed by Mourinho over the summer, along with former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Rui Patricio, and the Portuguese manager could find himself drawing on his expertise from spells at Chelsea,Manchester United and Tottenham.
Mirror Fotball has taken a look at some of the players linked with a move to the Stadio Olimpico, including one man he has signed before.
Maitland-Niles was linked with a summer departure from Arsenal and has struggled to force his way back into the team under Mikel Arteta after deciding to stay.
Mourinho is reportedly keen to bring the midfielder to Rome, adding to an English contingent that already includes Abraham and Chris Smalling.
Discussions have begun over a potential four-year deal, according to some sources, though Roma are yet to agree on a fee with Arsenal, who may consider the Africa Cup of Nations responsibilities of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny when making up their minds.
Dalot was one of Mourinho’s last signings at Manchester United, joining the club in the same summer as Fred, and the Portuguese defender hasn’t been able to establish himself how he might have hoped.
The 22-year-old spent last season in Serie A, gaining experience of the competition during a loan spell with AC Milan, and had to wait until December for his first Premier League start of the current campaign.
Dalot was linked with a reunion with Mourinho before being given a run of games under Ralf Rangnick, and his future may depend on whether or not United’s interim boss invests in more defensive options in January.
Dalot isn’t the only United player on Mourinho’s radar, with teenage defender Charlie Wellens also linked with a switch to Italy.
The youngster has yet to make his senior debut for the Red Devils, but his performances for the under-23 side – both at full-back and in midfield – attracting the attention of a number of clubs.
Wellens’ father Richie also came through United’s academy as a player, making just one senior appearance, and most recently spent time as manager of Doncaster Rovers.
Mourinho has already raided former club Chelsea for Abraham, and midfielder Loftus-Cheek has been linked with a move which could see him rejoin his former colleague.
Loftus-Cheek was handed his senior debut by Mourinho back in 2014, though the relationship between the pair didn’t always run smoothly.
With Chelsea welcoming back the likes of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic in recent weeks, Roma may be convinced to ramp up their pursuit of the England international.
England international Winks is another to have been linked with Roma in the Italian media after a difficult season with Tottenham.
The 25-year-old played just once in the Premier League under Nuno Espirito Santo, and looked to be ready for an exit after being predominantly used in the Europa Conference League.
However, talk of a move has died down a little since Antonio Conte’s arrival in north London, with an impressive performance against Liverpool suggesting he will remain part of the Italian manager’s plans.
Xhaka was high on Mourinho’s list over the summer, with the Swiss midfielder coming close to joining Roma from Arsenal.
The 29-year-old appeared to have ended Roma’s hopes of a move when he signed a new deal with the Gunners, and has shown his importance to the London club since returning from a knee injury.
However, as recently as November, Corriere Dello Sport reported that Mourinho’s side hadn’t fully given up hope of reviving a move, and it appears the manager remains a fan of the former Borussia Monchengladbach man.
Harry Maguire’s form so far this season has been inconsistent. Still, under Ralf Rangnick, he has seen a marked improvement, even if the standard of the opposition has been weaker after the run of games that saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lose his job.
At 28 years old and with the heavyweight of the £80 million price tag still weighing on his shoulders, the Manchester United defender needs to finally make the step up and prove why the club wanted him in the heart of their defence.
However, all of his potential partners have injury issues. Raphael Varane has already missed a significant portion of the season through injury, and Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, and Phil Jones have recurring problems. There is an opportunity for Rangnick to change this and bolster his options at the back to challenge Maguire.
So here are three defenders Rangnick could look to acquire in the January or summer windows for United :
Jules Koundes has been linked more regularly with a move to Chelsea, but Spanish outlet Fichajes are reporting that United could attempt to sign the player as early as January.
Kounde has been one of the best defenders in La Liga this season, and it shows in his team’s position in the league, with Sevilla currently second. They have also conceded the least goals, a testament to Kounde’s good work at the back.
His release clause is £68 million. Given Sevilla’s reliance on the player, it is unlikely that they will accept under that amount and given United’s need for reinforcements in other areas, a move for Kounde does not seem likely.
Barcelona has seen an exciting crop of young talent come into the first team over the past year, but with results not coming their way, some could leave while their stock is still high.
One such player is Ronald Araujo, who has quickly established himself as the leading man in Barcelona’s otherwise flailing defence. However, with a contract that expires in 2023, Barcelona will have to tie him down to a new contract or let the player leave.
Spanish outlet El Nacional states that United will offer Barcelona €30 million for the 22-year-old Uruguayan in the summer. However, Chelsea is also interested.
Araujo would be a statement signing. If he continues his development, he could easily be one of the top centre-backs in the world. He is already showing composure beyond his years, both in and out of possession.
The least well known of the names on this list, but this could show the influence of Rangnick. The Sun reports that United is interested in signing the 20-year-old 6’2 defender Armel Bella-Kotchap from VFL Bochum.
Manchester United’s choice of language when announcing the signing of Jadon Sancho this summer was interesting.
“This is his home, this is where he belongs,” was written across social media. That tweet currently has close to 175,000 likes and yet Sancho was actually born in Camberwell, South London, which is just over 200 miles away from Manchester.
It was also a better announcement than Alexis Sanchez playing the piano at Old Trafford, although that’s not really saying much.
The language used in the tweet was deliberate. It was an obvious swipe at Manchester City. It was the Reds’ own modern-day version of ‘Welcome to Manchester, Carlos Tevez’. Sancho had spent two years in City’s academy and United pushed hard to sign him in 2017 after learning that he was unsettled at the Etihad. Since then, it always felt inevitable that Sancho would sign for United.
Sancho was born in South London and supported Chelsea growing up, yet there was a strange, tangible feeling growing among supporters that he was always destined to wear red. The extent to which Sancho quickly excelled in Borussia Dortmund after he left City was impressive and under every highlight reel that appeared online were comments from excited United fans.
Then it began to seem that, in this world, there was nothing certain except death, taxes and United being linked with Sancho in every transfer window. Sancho was dazzling in Germany with his performances making those at home stand up and pay attention.
Sancho was perhaps brave to take a road less travelled by British players when he moved to Dortmund but that perceived gamble immediately paid off. He was playing week in and week out and in an environment geared towards nurturing his talent.
United continued to chase Sancho and yet talks to sign him collapsed last summer. Old Trafford chiefs had scouted Sancho extensively and they weren’t prepared to be disheartened by that development. They were simply relentless in their pursuit of the winger.
The framework was finally agreed for Sancho to join United in the summer for £72.9m. It had been a transfer four years in the making and it was always going to be impossible for the youngster to match the expectations that had been brewing over that period.
Sancho started slowly at United, but his ineffectiveness in matches was a product of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s lack of a distinct plan for the player, which was bizarre considering United had wanted Sancho so much. How can you try to sign a player for years and not have a plan on how best to use him upon his arrival? Only Solskjaer can answer that. He felt partly responsible for Sancho’s form.
Solskjaer left the club and suddenly there were glimpses of the Sancho that had ascended to one of Europe’s most exciting young talents at Dortmund. It didn’t feel like a coincidence. Sancho got his first goal in the first game after Solskjaer’s exit.
It was hard not to feel delighted for Sancho after that goal against Villarreal. The expectation and pressure that playing for a club of United’s stature should not be underestimated and the demands of the Premier League are vastly different to the Bundesliga.
Sancho has improved each week after that night in Spain. He was unfortunate to be taken off against Crystal Palace and again away at Norwich when Marcus Rashford was the obvious candidate to be called towards the bench. He seems to be rediscovering his confidence and swagger on the pitch and it’s telling that he’s now trying to beat a man when he wasn’t two months ago.
Sancho is still only 21 and United have placed their bets on his long-term potential, however, he’s now starting to deliver in the short-term. Ralf Rangnick knows all about his talent – having watched him in Germany – and he’s the perfect mentor for Sancho.
The first few months of his United career were difficult, but it seems he’s overcome that rough start and it’s now time to kick on.
There’s a reason why United chased Sancho for four years and supporters are starting to see it.
Newcastle vs Manchester United
Manchester United are set to return to action later today.
The Red Devils will face a trip to Newcastle, kicking off at St James’ at 8:00 pm UK time.
Manchester United headed into gameweek 19 of the Premier League season sat 6th in the table but have since slipped down to 7th.
However, as United currently have at least one game in hand on the sides above them, they could climb back up to 4th should they win said matches.
Newcastle, on the other hand, continue to flounder and look quite likely to be relegated this season.
The Magpies have still won just one game all season and, though they are only three points behind 17th place right now, Watford do have two games in hand on the North East outfit.
Eddie Howe’s side also have the worst defensive record in the league right now
Ralf Rangnick on Paul Pogba
Ahead of the Newcastle tie, Ralf Rangnick has once again spoke about Paul Pogba.
Pogba is yet to feature under the German due to injury, but Rangnick already looked to have made his feelings clear on Pogba’s future earlier this month, suggesting that if a player does not want to be at the club, they should leave.
But, when asked about Pogba ahead of Newcastle, Rangnick was keen to focus more on getting Pogba back training fit, which he suggested could take another couple of weeks:
“First question, yes, of course I have spoken to Paul. On the day he came back from Dubai, we spoke in person. We also spoke over the phone when he was still in Dubai.
“Right now, it’s about him getting fit again, getting training fit, not to say match fit. I think this will take, as far as I know, another couple of weeks and until then my full focus is on the players who are available and with whom I can play the next upcoming games.”
It was a united family Christmas for David and Victoria Beckham and their growing children – which they shared in this adorable family snap.
But there was a hilarious detail that eagle-eyed fans managed to spot, showing exactly HOW much those Beckham youngsters have been growing.
The entire family, including Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper Seven, were dressed to the nines as they posed in front of a Christmas tree in the snap shared on Boxing Day with mum Victoria and dad David.
Brooklyn, 22, had his hands on 10-year-old Harper’s shoulders while Romeo, 19, posed next to his father.
Manchester United legend David, 46, beamed for the camera as he stood beside his wife with his hand on her shoulder.
“Christmas kisses from the Beckhams!” Posh Spice, 47, captioned the sweet post, while David captioned it “Merry Christmas”.
However, fans were loving a little detail of the footie icon which was spotted if you look close enough at the otherwise classy family photo they shared.
For David and Victoria’s followers took to the comment section to point out that David was, in fact, standing on his tippy toes next to Romeo.
“Love the family photo AND the tip toes, cheers!,” said a laughing @onhudson3327.
While @Matthew.brooks101 said: “Does anyone else notice that @DavidBeckham has to go on his tippy toes to match the height of his boys”.
While @Itsmethettej wrote: “@davidbeckham I see that tip toe action bud.”
Some people even took to Twitter to share a zoomed-in version of the photo.
It certainly brought great joy to fans of the couple, who are pointing out just how tall budding model Romeo has now become as the tallest member of the showbiz family.
The photo appears to show that he is now even taller than his oldest brother Brooklyn, who is pictured next to mum Victoria wearing a stunning green dress.
The sweet Beckham family photo comes after Victoria shared a clip of her hubby singing in front of the fireplace.
David was roasting chestnuts and singing Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song when Posh started filming him.
“You’re trying hard with that vocal,” the Spice Girls singer laughed as he turned around to look at her.
