Andriy Shevchenko: The former Ukraine and Chelsea striker says his mother and sister are still under siege in Kyiv.

Andriy Shevchenko’s family fled to their home in Kyiv to two other families who had to escape from the nearby village of Bucha. Shevchenko: “I think it would be more dangerous if my mom and my sister tried to leave.”

Andriy Shevchenko told Sky Sports News that his mother and sister were still under siege in Kyiv after two weeks of continuous bombardment by Russian forces.

Despite the city’s lack of food and water, he says he is healthy and determined to stay home.

Shevchenko’s family now also provided refuge at their home in Kyiv for two other families who must escape from a nearby village bucha, 25 kilometers west of Kiev.

“There were a lot of battles,” Shevchenko explains. “My mother and sister have now moved people in dire circumstances with them.

“There is no food or electricity in the bucha. They are my sister’s friends and they lived underground for five days.

“There has been a terrible bombardment in the area. Bucha and nearby Irpin’ and Hostomel’ – I know these villages very well. And they have been completely destroyed. No buildings remain.

“I used to go to the coach to train when I was young. It’s terrible.”

The former Chelsea striker and Ballon d’Or winner has tried to encourage his family to leave Kyiv, but now he says he can’t, even if they want to.

“The humanitarian corridor has been attacked by Russian forces. It would be even more dangerous if my mother and sister tried to leave.”
