Matt Doherty missed the rest of the reason with a medial collateral ligament injury. Doherty was replaced during Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa after a challenge with Matty Cash. Doherty has been in good shape at Tottenham in recent weeks.

Tottenham defender Matt Doherty will not end the season with a ruptured medial collateral ligament (MCL) during Saturday’s game against Aston Villa.

Doherty was able to leave the pitch in the first half after being tackled by Matty Cash in the first half, but the 30-year-old will miss 12 weeks with a knee injury.

Antonio Conte’s flank took a hit as Tottenham climbed into fourth place as Doherty had two goals and three assists in recent weeks, three points higher than their rivals Arsenal in fifth place.

A 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday, including a hat-trick from Son Heung-Min, was their sixth win in seven Premier League matches, greatly boosting their hopes for a place in the top four.

Doherty’s injury at Villa Park was the only headache in another great game as the Irish national stumbled 21 minutes after Tottenham’s 1-0 victory following Heung-Min Son’s early opening goal. He was later seen wearing knee braces and leaving the field of play.

The former Wolves native has been impressed by playing at both right and left wingbacks under Conte, who has struggled for his form since joining the club in 2020. Sergio Reguilon is expected to be his permanent replacement from the left.

Doherty is also likely to miss the Irish Nations League game against Ukraine, Armenia and Scotland in June.
