LONDON / CAIRO – The British Embassy in Cairo is launching a one-of-a-kind “Sports for Climate” competition to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on health, productivity and the economy at large.

In an effort to explain the effects of climate change on our daily lives, the Embassy has teamed up with World Gym Dandy Mall, powered by Technogym, to show how climatic conditions can affect human performance, especially when people are outdoors and directly exposed to warmer temperatures. the world is witnessing global warming.

The competition is divided into three parts: an indoor training session, an outdoor training session and an awards ceremony. About forty participants aged 20 to 35 took part in the first part of the competition during the weekend. They included university students from the British University in Egypt (BUE), Modern Sciences and Art University (MSA) and Hertfordshire and Coventry Universities.–2021/c/pjNrmhTTp0A

Through fun and engaging sports activities, ranging from rowing and squats to push-ups, participants took part in an indoor training challenge at the World Gym, which they will repeat in the Embassy Garden on Saturday 25 September. The heart rates of the participants will be compared over the two workouts, showing the difference in performance.

The results of the competition will be shared during an award ceremony, hosted by the British Ambassador to the Embassy in the presence of other diplomatic missions and ministries.

British Ambassador to Egypt Gareth Bayley said: “This is a unique and original experience, initiated by the Embassy to show in a concrete way how climate change affects each of us. Global warming means changes in our daily lives – not just athletes of course, but outdoor workers as well – and brings us new challenges to overcome. It is together that we meet these challenges at best. Globally, that’s what a COP26 climate conference in the UK in November will propose: bringing together governments, including our Egyptian partners, businesses, community groups and individuals to discuss how best to tackle the issue. against climate change, to take ambitious action and make a real difference to tackle a threat that threatens our very existence. “
