The Brazilian brought the Santiago Bernabéu to their feet with a stunning goal to open the scoring in Real Madrid’s clash with Manchester City, before Kevin De Bruyne scored City’s equalizer

Vinicius Junior impressively opened the scoring for Real Madrid against Manchester City in the Champions League semi-final and, in doing so, surpassed the European record for a footballing legend for the club.

The Brazilian fired unstoppably at the goal from the edge of the area in the 36th minute of the first leg, following a beautiful move by Eduardo Camavinga after the Frenchman had escaped Bernardo Silva’s attention.

The 22-year-old scored the winning goal for Real in last season’s final against Liverpool, and it is Vinicius’ 15th Champions League goal for the club, surpassing compatriot Ronaldo.

The goal stunned former Real striker Steve McManaman in the BT Sport comment box, with many on social media claiming it was a goal that showed why Vinicius can be considered the best player in the world at the moment.

The two-time Champions League champion said: “Where did that come from? I didn’t know a man of that size could hit the ball so hard.

“Brilliant game by Camavinga and Luka Modric, taking the wrong side of Bernardo Silva, and he came out, the Frenchman.

“His first touch was brilliant, Vinicius Junior, letting Gundogan pass through Gundogan’s body, who couldn’t take him down. Then he almost uses Ruben Dias as a screen, but the power he generates absolutely goes through Ederson – no way on everything. Bang. Out of nowhere, Los Blancos are one-nil!”

Commentator Rio Ferdinand also praised the goal and how it came against the run of play.

“I was blown away by the composure, the bravery, how Real just sit and wait.” Fernando said.

“City got here, they absolutely beat them in terms of possession but that doesn’t count for anything, they sit and wait, they are composed, they focus and when it comes time to attack, the clinical element of this team speaks for itself.

“Luka Modric wins the ball, hits the press. Vinicius, I was freaking out, that was crazy.”

Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League winner Daniel Sturridge also praised Vinicius.

He tweeted: “I sincerely hope he keeps improving. He knocks you out of your seat when he has the ball but when Real Madrid put pressure on he is the catalyst. The best player.”
