West Ham retaliated for Sunday’s Premier League loss to Manchester United by kicking their hosts out of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford.

Manuel Lanzini’s ninth-minute performance, his first goal in almost 12 months and only his second since May 2019, proved enough to get David Moyes’ side to the round of 16.

Not even the introduction of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood in the second half could bring the game in the direction of the home side as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer exposed the pre-game conversation about the strength of his squad as a bit hollow.

Lanzini’s goal was just a reward for West Ham’s flying start. Ryan Fredericks eased between Jadon Sancho and Alex Telles before delivering a low cross to the Argentine, which ended in the lower corner.

The visitors should have won three times in the last five minutes, but Andriy Yarmolenko, Mark Noble and Jarrod Bowen missed the target. In the end it didn’t matter.

It was the Hammers’ first triumph at Old Trafford since Carlos Tevez’s 2007 match winner kept them in the Premier League – and the first in a cup competition since Paolo di Canio scored the only goal in an FA Cup meeting in 2001.

For Manchester United and Solskjaer, it’s an untimely end to their hopes for the first available cutlery of the season and the wait for a trophy that dates back to 2017.

The fringes of Man Utd don’t shine
The defeat came after Solskjaer chose a completely different team – all full internationals – than the one that played at the London stadium. He now has to make difficult decisions about some of his fringe players who will now have even fewer opportunities to play.

Anthony Martial was a marginal figure in attack, Juan Mata was replaced by Fernandes in the second half, while Lingard, who like Mata has a contract that expires in the summer, had no significant impact.

Additionally, on his first appearance of the season, Dean Henderson didn’t do much to suggest he posed a threat to David de Gea in goal.

The doubts about Solskjaer will also reappear after the Champions League defeat with the Young Boys last week.

Not that this would bother Moyes and his West Ham team, who were relatively comfortable keeping their hosts at bay. Mata grabbed the bar from an acute angle and debut goalkeeper Alphonse Areola parried Greenwood with a good save.

Manchester United will play Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday 25 September (12:30 p.m. BST). West Ham visits Leeds on the same day (3:00 PM BST).

“Credit to David Moyes”
West Ham coach Stuart Pearce: “Delighted with the result. It’s a really difficult place. We started the game very well. Could have won by two goals to make the evening a little easier.”

“We were disappointed we didn’t get anything over the weekend. United are an amazing team with lots of talent. We aim to challenge Man Utd.”

“Thanks to David [Moyes]. This is the first time he has beaten her since he left. He’s been in almost 1,000 games, seen it all, done it all. He’ll take it calmly. Not washed away . “

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “It was a bad start and when we decided to play, we played good football, a lot of shots, a lot of pressure, a very good attitude, but we lacked a little.

“Every game is important, but you can see from the team selection that we’ve always used this competition when I’ve been here at the club to give minutes to those who need it. It’s a long, long season.

“I never really won this tournament, this hunt will go on, it’s a trophy I would like to have. But we made decisions to bring the squad up to date.”

About Anthony Martial: “I don’t think it’s right to go into individual performances. Anthony was the same as the rest of the team, we played good football, we lacked something of that edge and he knows what we want from him . ” . He will keep working and take advantage of his opportunities. “
